The biggest event we put on each year is our annual convention, which takes place during the latter part of October, when the weather is superb in the San Antonio area. Our convention is spread out over four days and is a great opportunity to visit with current and former instructors. We have a number of social events that take place throughout the week. We kick the activities off on Tuesday evening with an “Early Bird Mixer” to welcome everyone to the area. We have held this event each year at the VFW on Pinn Road, just off Military Drive. Rumor has it that a number of individuals sneak off to a hole-in-the-wall restaurant afterwards for some of the best authentic Mexican food you will ever eat. On Wednesday morning we hold our annual general membership meeting to discuss business of the Association. Following that, we head to the JBSA-Lackland Golf Course for the annual Blue Rope Golf Tournament, which is co-sponsored by the Blue Rope Association. Do not let the name of the event fool you, everyone is invited to participate. We typically max out with the number of teams permitted on the course, so get your teams in as soon as you can. Following the golf tournament, we usually have a number of food preparation competitions. This includes chili, brisket, and barbeque. We give cash prizes to the winner of each category. On Thursday, BMT is gracious to provide in-depth tours of the squadrons and we observe a number of BMT specific events, such as the Airman’s Run, as well as Formal Retreat. In the evening we hold the annual Honor’s Banquet in which the Association recognizes the accomplishments of the active duty instructors, as well as those who are serving in other capacities. Friday, of course, is Parade! We never get tired of hearing the words, “Sound Adjutant’s Call!” If you have not been to JBSA-Lackland in many years, you will be in for a treat. There are no longer Mass Formations, but instead you will see individual flights March in Review. Afterwards, all the flights come forward to the Line of March and there the Reviewing Officer administers the Oath of Enlistment. It is an incredible experience to say the least. We then head over to the Blue Rope Monument where the name of the current Blue Rope of the Year is added to the Blue Rope of the Year Monument. Finally, we gather around the MTI Monument for a group photograph.
All former instructors and their significant others are invited to attend. BMT rolls out the red carpet and we are treated like royalty. If you have not been back in a while, I promise you it will be worth your time to do so.
